The tests in the hospital did not show anything that may have caused the change although they speculated that she may have suffered a mini-stroke. At this point, she stopped walking and talking completely. While in the hospital, she lost a lot of weight and quite frankly we were horrified at the change in her.
On the other hand, Dad started to look great. He was well rested and in very good humour (all things considered). He visited Mom daily at the hospital. Mom was in the hospital for 3 weeks and we tried to get Dad to put her in a home because we knew it was just too much for him. Instead, he maintained his typical "wait and see" attitude.
Mom was put on the "Home First" Program from CCAC, which is a Seniors service that works through the government. She had 8 hours of personal care per day for 3 months. There was a nurse that came to the house and CCAC provided a hospital bed, wheelchair and basically any other supplies. She needed a lot of attention and was now bedridden. She developed a few bedsores, which added to the problem.
Our well-rested father on the other hand ended up getting more and more tired. It was simply too much for him but every time was brought up the subject of getting Mom into a home, it was "wait and see". We believe he simply wanted to stay in his home as opposed to having to move - Dad like many others never liked change but if change is meant to happen, those in Spirit will ensure that circumstances force the change and that change was about to happen - only 1 month after Mom came home from the hospital.
Check in tomorrow for Part 3.
